Electricity usage

Untill last week, we had not read our electricity meter since new year. In the meanwhile, we got a new bed with elevation (!) and a Wii, both known to consume electricity. For this reason, we were a bit anxious whether our electricity consumption had skyrocketed, but was there any reason?

There are several reasons for an increased power consumption: the adapters for the elevation beds could not be turned off (untill I built the feature), the Wii could remain plugged in after playing and lastly, I am unemployed and therefore sitting around the apartment with the computer.

In Denmark, a good goal for consumption is approx. 1,000 kWh per year per adult in an apartment. So any number beneath 2,000 kWh is good. Last year, we used approx. 1,300 kWh total which is quite impressive, as we have a couple of computers, wireless routers, mobiles that need recharging etc.

Below is a graph showing the estimated yearly usage, based on a couple of measurements. The estimation at a certain time is calculated with a linear regression spanning the measurement at the given time and the five previous measurements.

Electricity usage from middle of 2008 until January, 2010.

(At the time of this writing, the estimation is 1,389 kWh per year.)

As shown, our usage has skyrocketed - or but numerically, the increase since october 2008 is approx. 5%. This is not that bad, given the conditions written above. To limit our usage, we turn of as many utilities at the powersource as possible, leaving only the refrigerator and freezer on at night. For our beds, I did some simple re-wiring, adding some switches so the elevations can be turned on and off as necessary.
